Curriculum Vitae
Artist Statement
Impressionism dominates my landscapes in oils and acrylics, which are done in oil primarily on Ampersand Gesso panels, which creates a smooth surface upon which I build future layers. For oils, I prefer Daniel Smith water-miscible pigment; and for acrylics, I like using Golden Open Acrylics. When painting En Plein Air, I strive to re-create the atmosphere I am experiencing, whether it is the soft warm breeze over a shimmering Ohio lake, the delicate fragrance of a newly harvested field, or the stark, but impressive buttes of the Southwest. In the studio, I strive to portray these experiences, as I work from field studies and/or photos. In watercolor, I prefer painting florals and portraits.
Artist Biography
I was introduced to the wet-into-wet method: white chalk on blue construction paper in elementary school; and not until the age of 16, did I resume my art studies. Again, I was introduced to working wet into wet with inks and watercolors. Along with classic art instruction in perspective drawing, painting, fashion design, & art history; I fell in love with many great artists: Michelangelo, DaVinci, Monet, and more. At this time, I was privileged to explore stained glass windows, and paintings in many Catholic churches throughout the Cincinnati, Dayton, & Columbus areas of Ohio.
Our family often traveled to the heart of southeastern Ohio, where I was privileged to visually soak in the beauties of that area. Most of the undulating shapes and lines of my landscapes are in direct response to exploring hills, meadows, forests & mountain ranges from Ohio to Florida. Atlantic seacoast visits have inspired paintings of rocky cliffs, waterfalls, serene beach scenes, and lighthouses.
Following high school, I completed a degree in Art Education in Dayton, Ohio, and immediately upon graduation, I began teaching art at the high school level. While working on my Masters in Special Education, I continued my explorations of watercolor, oil & acrylic painting through workshops under internationally renowned artists: Chuck Marshall (2010), Elin Pendleton (2010), Sandy Maudlin (09), Judi Betts (07), Stephen Quiller (05), Pat Dews, (04), Joseph Fettingis (00), Cheng Khee-Chee (99), Paul St. Denis (95), and Tom Lynch (94).
Recent travels to the southwestern states of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico have jump-started a love of abstract/expressionist painting. As well as painting professionally, I enjoy teaching weekly in Troy, Ohio, and have enjoyed doing a few workshops in both watercolor and acrylics.
